This Indonesian made teak table will satisfy many by virtue of its sturdy design, moderate quality teak, and easy assembly (just insert two pins in the legs). It is the right design for a reasonable price (for teak, at least). It comes as unfinished teak. You must apply wax, teak oil, or a varnish to it. I don’t recommend varnish unless you have plenty of experience varnishing teak – by the time you’ve properly applied five to ten coats of a high quality varnish, the summer will be over. Teak oil is a good bet if properly applied – usually two or three coats wiped on. My choice is for a high quality liquid wax coating created for fine woods. Boat stores have all of these coatings – try Hamilton Marine (down Maine) or the boating megastore, West Marine, or your local chandlery. An alternative low maintenance strategy for teak is to just let it go grey – clean it occasionally, that’s all. But the truth is that oiled or waxed teak is an irresistibly beautiful wood that gives some people goosebumps of pleasure to behold. It’s the upkeep that irritates. The UV light from the sun breaks down all coatings in time.
The table arrived via EGL trucking in about two weeks. It comes on a standard size pallet, well wrapped. You might need help getting it inside. My good opinion of the table is slightly diminished by some ‘burn’ marks caused by power tools finishing the legs. Also, two of the joints of the octagonal outer section of the table top had small gaps – not desirable in high priced teak items. And the dowels securing parts of the leg structure are not planed smooth with the surface, but are ‘proud’ as woodworkers call it, something one doesn’t like to see in a high priced teak item. But this is for outdoors, not the parlor, so a bit of roughness might be tolerated. Otherwise, get out a very sharp chisel, carefully slice off the dowels flush with the surface, and sand carefully with very fine grain sandpaper before finishing with a coating.
The top surface is not a monolithic, smooth top but rather has slats, making for good drainage outdoors and perhaps reducing warping. You have to have some humility before teak. It will outlive you. Someone lucky enough to inherit your teak furniture will be the next mortal to care for items made of this (nearly) immortal wood.
